How could creation come out of nothing
How did we come into existence? How did the universe, earth, and life come to exist? This is a massive question and one that the Bible states right up front:
In the beginning, God created the heavens and the earth.
Genesis 1:1 ESV
The Bible claims to be the “inspired word of God” (2 Timothy 3:16) and God, in the Bible, claims to be the Creator of the universe creating everything out of nothing. This is remarkable and perhaps very difficult for us to understand. However, if we consider the alternative, we must ask: Was there not a beginning to everything? How could the universe exist from the beginning? Can such order, complexity, precision and beauty come from nothing? Is the universe eternal?
Again, God answers these questions in the Bible when He says,
You are my witnesses,” declares the LORD, “and my servant whom I have chosen, that you may know and believe me and understand that I am he. Before me no god was formed, nor shall there be any after me.
Isaiah 43:10
I am the Alpha and the Omega, the first and the last, the beginning and the end.
Revelation 22:13 ESV
God claims to be the only eternal entity: there was nothing before Him! In fact, the Big Bang, a scientifically proven phenomenon, is an interesting explanation as the primary event that created the conditions for the universe and for life itself.
The idea of “the Big Bang” is not incompatible with the Bible. It was not random and chaotic, but rather a carefully orchestrated event resulting in the incredible universe we have. Lee Strobel, in his book, The Case for a Creator, in an interview with William Lane Craig, PHD, THD, says regarding this topic,
The third main piece of evidence for the Big Bang is the origin of light elements. Heavy elements, like carbon and iron, are synthesized in the interior of stars and then exploded through supernovae into space. But very, very light elements, like deuterium and helium, cannot have been synthesized in the interior of stars, because you would need an even more powerful furnace to create them. These elements have been forged in the furnace of the Big Bang itself at temperatures that were billions of degrees. There’s no other explanation.
Strobel, Lee, The Case of a Creator, Grand Rapids, Mich., Zondervan, 2004, 105-106.
You see, the Big Bang was not a chaotic, disorderly event. Instead, it appears to have been fine-tuned for the existence of intelligent life with a complexity and precision that literally defies human comprehension. In other words, the universe we see today – and our very existence – depends upon a set of highly special initial conditions. This phenomenon is strong evidence tat the Big Bang was not an accident, but that it was designed.
Strobel, Lee, The Case of a Creator, Grand Rapids, Mich., Zondervan, 2004, 106
This is very intriguing and yet, God says that He created the universe by His word from things not visible.
By faith we understand that the universe was created by the word of God, so that what is seen was not made out of things that are visible.
Hebrews 11:3 ESV
Furthermore, God tells us that He was able to do this because of the incredible wisdom that He possesses. This wisdom was with Him in the beginning.
The LORD by wisdom founded the earth; by understanding he established the heavens…
Proverbs 3:19 ESV
The LORD possessed me (wisdom) at the beginning of his work, the first of his acts of old. Ages ago I was set up, at the first, before the beginning of the earth.
Proverbs 8:22-23 ESV
Creation was not a random, chaotic act. What we observe in our environment, on this planet, the universe and life itself speaks to a highly intelligent designer. There is scientific evidence to indicate this and the Bible itself claims that God was there in the beginning possessing immense wisdom and foresight before anything else existed.
Yes, Creation came out of nothing, but this was only possible through the One who has always existed: The LORD God. See what else he has to say, especially about His plans for the future: consult His word, The Bible!
